Basic mechanical parts of a car

These are the basic mechanical parts (read
assemblies) in a gas powered vehicle:
1. Engine - provides power, primarily to propel the vehicle, and also to support auxiliary functions (air conditioning, electricity/battery)
2. Transmission - takes the power output of the engine and relays it to the wheels - in other words converts the power produced by the engine into motion. Also helps choose direction of motion - forwards or backwards. May include a propeller shaft in case of rear-wheel drive vehicles.
3. Wheels/axle - receive the power produced by the engine, via the transmission and propel the vehicle. Also provide a limited degree of cushioning and a lot of road grip.
4. Suspension - cushions/softens/dampens jolts from rocks/potholes on the surface the vehicle is moving on.
5. Steering - lets the driver steer the vehicle in different directions.
6. Brakes - to slow down and stop the vehicle.
